Le Grand Idea
We may have been involved with Olympics, Paralympics and Commonwealth Games all over the world, but it’s not every year that a major sporting event such as the Tour de France begins right on your doorstep. This year, Le Grand Depart will take place in Yorkshire and with the excitement building, we are very pleased and proud to be involved in a number of local projects and events, including the judging of a rather special competition for local primary schools.
Run by the North Yorkshire Society of Architects and sponsored by RIBA, the idea behind the Bikebay competition was to invite local children to design bike storage that embraced both the spirit of Yorkshire and the excitement surrounding this huge sporting event. The chosen design will be manufactured here at Stage One before being installed in Harrogate in time for the start of the race in July.
The entries were judged by Andrew Jones MP for Harrogate, Anthony Clerici, Vice President of Royal Institute of British Architects and Tim Leigh, Sales and Marketing Director here at Stage One and appropriately enough, a keen cyclist.
Winner Will Hunt visited our workshops last week to see where his design will be brought to life. His simple yet effective design echoes the undulating route of Le Grand Depart through the Yorkshire landscape and we look forward to welcoming him back to approve the final result.
