3D Printing at York Mediale
As part of the brand-new media arts festival, York Mediale, we teamed up with our sister company, Fluxaxis, to deliver a stunning 3D printed sculpture. The installation, ‘Token Homes’ from international artist, Matthew Plummer Fernandez, will be temporarily housed in York’s Kings Square from 27th September – 6th October.
Token Homes is a playful statement about the growing housing crisis – one of the most potent issues of a generation. In burgeoning cities, social housing shortfall is fuelling property investment schemes, leading to architecture devoid of aesthetic value and restricted room for habitation.
Once Fluxaxis had finished printing the sculpture, we assisted in the final finishing stages. Various finishes were discussed, with the artist deciding upon a blue-green iridescent sheen, which we sprayed over the black print material. This finish gives the sculpture real depth and helps to highlight the intricacies of the print when seen in different lighting.
Edwin Stokes, Fluxaxis materials expert: ‘It has been inspiring to work with Matthew throughout York Mediale’s Artist in Residence programme. The collaboration has pushed us to explore new ways to use our technology to realise creative art. It’s great to see Matthew’s sculpture finally finished and installed in York.’
