Pop Up Activation in Leeds City Centre
This two-week summer activation was designed to draw people to an under-used public space in Leeds. We collaborated with Leeds City Council, Leeds Art Gallery and DLA Design on similar projects in 2017 and 2018, so we were delighted to be involved again this year.
DLA’s design utilised the same two containers from 2018’s activation which were filled with play equipment and games. Taking just two weeks from concept to installation, the activation includes a brightly painted structure fixed on top of the two containers, creating shelter. This required bespoke fixing panels to ensure stability during the activation. We used repurposed steel for the three main frames, bolted together before installing the main column underneath. The column featured a metal meshing, with the idea being that children who used the activation could attach their creative artworks. In a similar vein, we fabricated a dropped steel mesh frame that sat in between a gap in the roof layer. We sprayed the top of the structure bright red using Polycarbonate which when light shines through, creates a red hue on the ground, attracting visitors to the space.
