Frantic Assembly’s 30th Anniversary production, Lost Atoms featured an immersive set design suitable for touring.

Stage One was commissioned for the manufacture of a structure reminiscent of a multi-drawer filing cabinet. At 6-metre wide, 4-metre high, and 1-metre deep, the challenge was to produce a structure that was stable enough to be climbed on by performers, yet sufficiently lightweight to be demounted, re-located and re-built without the support of plant equipment.

The steel frame was fabricated in our metal shop, then finished with a gold, rustic appearance and a timber edge frame rebated to accommodate an integrated LED channel. We installed runners to the selection of drawers that would be opened to support the performers, and fitted white plywood drawer fascias, unfinished for the purpose of rehearsals. The client added the final scenic treatment before the show’s opening. Finally, our machine shop manufactured bespoke drawer handles with a load bearing capacity of approximately 90kg, fitted to the same selection of drawers with runners.

We test built the structure in our premises, dividing the overall 1.2tonne mass into sections that could be bolted together on site throughout the tour.
