Sculpted Figure – RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Location
RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Sometimes it’s the talent of our staff that brings in specific projects, sometimes it’s the technology. In this case, it was our large volume 5 axis CNC machine that stepped in at the last minute to help with a sculpture for Chelsea Flower Show.
The Meningitis Now Futures Garden at Chelsea was designed by award-winning designer, John Everiss. The garden featured five carved figures, each one created from a 3D scan of a young person who had experienced the disease. We were supplied with a model created from one of these scans that depicted a prone, slightly curved figure. The figure was carved from a laminated cedar, the layers of cedar planks glued together to create a rich material with contrasting wood colours. In keeping with the design intent, the selected tool path was not especially fine, allowing the semi-rough surface to weather beautifully over time and the cedar to patinate and mellow.
