Sculpted Figure - Chelsea Flower Show
Sometimes it’s the talent of our staff that brings in specific projects, sometimes it’s the technology. In this case, it was our large volume 5 axis CNC machine that stepped in at the last minute to help with a sculpture for Chelsea Flower Show.
The Meningitis Now Futures Garden at Chelsea was designed by award-winning designer, John Everiss. The garden featured five carved figures, each one created from a 3D scan of a young person who had experienced the disease. We were supplied with a model created from one of these scans that depicted a prone, slightly curved figure.
The figure was carved from a laminated cedar, the layers of cedar planks glued together to create a rich material with contrasting wood colours. In keeping with the design intent, the selected tool path was not especially fine, allowing the semi-rough surface to weather beautifully over time and the cedar to patinate and mellow.
