"Automation in creative contexts is about delivering impactful audience experiences."

We use the phrase ‘automation’ all the time at Stage One. It has a very specific meaning to us and sometimes we’re guilty of not clearly explaining exactly what automation means for our clients. Here is a very brief explainer that we hope will build a clearer understanding of its scope and power.

In the creative industries, automation refers to the use of technology such as motors, control systems, and software to manage movement in live events, installations, and performances. Unlike industrial automation, which focuses on efficiency on production lines, automation in creative contexts is about delivering impactful audience experiences set in the context of precision, creativity, and safety.

We refer to our automation technology stack as Qmotion. This product set allows show producers to control moving elements from a single prop to a whole stadium full of stage engineering and scenery. Qmotion allows the execution of complex sequences of movement with pinpoint accuracy, often synchronised with music, lighting and video. The term “Qmotion” comes from “cue-based motion,” where movement is triggered by show cues in the performance.

In events and installations, automation allows designers to create dynamic environments that transform in real-time. For instance, a kinetic sculpture in an art installation might slowly change shape in response to sound, or a live concert might feature moving video walls that move as part of the show’s choreography. Without automation, these movements would need to be managed manually, something that’s often impractical or imprecise in the context of a live show.

Automation brings creative visions to life with consistency and safety, enabling show designers, artists, and technical directors to push the boundaries of what’s possible. It plays a vital role in delivering spectacular high-impact experiences that audiences have come to expect of live events, exhibitions, and interactive installations.
