New Beauty for Old Flame
The cauldron petals were the perfect synthesis of the artistic and the technical.
Each one of the 204 hand-made copper petals was a different size and shape, but all had to come together as the cauldron stems rose, fitting together like jigsaw pieces to form the cauldron bowl.
Wooden formers were made using our 5 Axis CNC facilities, around which each petal was formed. Hand-wrought from 3mm copper, it took eight hours just to hand beat the copper sheet into the delicate shape required for each one. Using an appropriately distorted font, the name of a participating nation was etched across the rim of each petal.
A total of three complete sets of petals were made, each undergoing a long list of careful and highly specialised processes.
