Designed by artist Ed Kluz, ‘Between Light and Chaos’ was a large-scale immersive art installation located within the beautiful grounds of Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire.
Located within Fountains Hall, the main feature was a multi-media artwork of sound and video projected onto a stage set of mirror and masks. The centrepiece of this stage set is Mascaron, the sculpture of a giant classical face based on a carving that was previously found in Studley Royal House, now demolished.
We were commissioned to produce the sculpture and supporting steel framework. Working closely with the artist we were provided with a scan of the carving, which our CAD team transformed into a 3D model. The model was then input into our large-scale 5-axis CNC machine to create a negative mould, formed using high-density foam, and GRP (fibreglass) applied to create a hard yet hollow sculpture of the face.
The sculpture was then sanded and spray painted white to provide a smooth projection surface finish and finally mounted upon the steel frame.
Accompanying the multi-media installation, the client team curated the ‘The Making Of’ exhibition, an outline of the artist’s journey throughout the development of this project. We were delighted to welcome Ed Kluz and the National Trust team to our premises here at Stage One to document how the sculpture was made.
