Doctors of the World – Global Clinic

Client
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners

This innovative flat pack clinic addresses some key problems faced by doctors when working in remote parts of the world, providing a hygienic environment in a structure that is adaptable and quick to assemble. We manufactured this prototype in our workshops, cutting the flat pack components from plywood using our CNC laser cutting facilities.

The design is the result  a collaboration between Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners,  BuroHappold Engineering and ChapmanBDSP. The plans can be emailed to a computer anywhere in the world, enabling the parts to be manufactured locally. The flat pack design means the clinic takes about a day to erect and at 400kg, is easy to transport, even over difficult terrain. The inner plywood structure can be covered with a different outer skin depending on local climate conditions and importantly, also offers the opportunity for sound-proofing, enabling doctors to provide confidential consultations.

The prototype is on display at the Wellcome Collection until April 2019.
