Asgard is no ordinary retail outlet. They pride themselves on producing historically accurate reproductions of Celtic jewellery and artefacts, all handmade in the UK and frequently supplied for use in TV and film. They’ve just opened a shop in York and approached us to create a Viking throne to help promote the new venture.
The throne stands at just over 2m tall and was designed by Asgard’s founder, Jim Glazzard. We worked with Jim’s hand sketches to a tight deadline, using solid timber lengths to create the throne before hand carving extra details for the intricate pattern. Once carved, the throne was stained, waxed and scenically distressed to ensure it looked the part. This project was a great opportunity to employ traditional techniques and it was a delight to work with such a knowledgeable enthusiast on a small but local project.
When asked about the project by YorkMix, Jim said, “I’ve seen Stage One’s work and know that they have a superb reputation for creating items that are beautiful and durable, so have been working with two of their apprentices to turn the dream into reality.”
