Leeds Art Gallery: 'three of four'
Designed by visual artist Ayşe Erkmen, ‘three of four’ undertakes some ‘architectural anthropology’, directly referencing the rediscovered vaulted glass roof of Leeds City Art Gallery’s Central Court. This striking architectural feature, uncovered during recent renovations, has been articulated in aluminium, arching though the entire gallery space.
Using the artist’s drawings, we produced 3D models of the aluminium framework. Precision was a primary consideration: to facilitate installation, the sculpture was manufactured in sections, each of which had to line up correctly in order to be welded together efficiently during the four-days on site. A mixture of rolling and laser tube cutting provided precise components for each section. Great care was taken during installation, with access to the Central Court taking place via an ornate staircase surrounded by art works and some pieces even being brought in over the Gallery’s roof.
‘three of four’ is a major commission for the 110-day Yorkshire Sculpture International festival.
